How to Deal with Unexpected Weight Gain

People start running for many different reasons. One of the most popular reasons to start running for people is to help lose weight. I was fortunate to grow up without worrying about childhood obesity. When I joined cross country in high school it was more because my friends all decided to join and my brother ran when he was in high school too. What I noticed during cross country and track and field season was my appetite skyrocketed! I ate my entire lunch, but also snacked during the day. When I would go out to dinner, I had my own appetizer, main entrée and dessert! Because we burned so many calories during our runs, our appetites increased with it. I never worried about gaining weight from the food I was eating since I knew I would burn it all off the very next day. The problem came when people graduated high school and they stopped running. I knew a few runners who visited us after they had graduated and saw that they had blown up, literally! Apparently, what happens is that even though you stop running, your huge appetite stays the same.

That gives you two choices: never run to begin with, or continue running after high school. What I did instead was participate in every other activity I found interesting: gym, basketball, football, soccer, even karate! I did eventually come back to running and am now doing that in addition with many other activities. Other than being active, there are other supplements that may help maintain and even lose weight. So in addition to leading a healthy lifestyle and eating right, you should be able to help lose any extra weight you may have gained in the past.
