How to Start a Regular Running Regime for the First Time

Running is the ultimate and most effective form of cardiovascular exercise you can do. That’s why it remains the staple for fitness fanatics and the starting point for newcomers looking to get fit. You probably have a lot of questions you want answers to before you get started though.

A lot of people don’t know where to start or how to plan their running routine. It doesn’t need to be too difficult to plan though. You just need to start slowly and ease into it. This guide will help you out when you’re getting started.

Where to Start

Knowing where to start is never easy. It depends on your fitness and your current running capabilities. I’d start cautiously if you’re not used to exercising though. Even just going for a run 2 or 3 times a week can have a big impact on your fitness.

Each time you run, you should increase your speed steadily and try to push yourself a little more every time. But you only need to run for approximately 20 or 30 minutes at a time to begin with. Go for longer once you feel comfortable in doing so.

Where to Run

Different kinds of running have different benefits for the body. If you haven’t been exercising for a while, it is probably best to start on a treadmill. That way you reduce the chances of injury as a treadmill has a soft surface that cushions each step.

Treadmills also have the advantage of being away from the changeable weather, and there’s nothing you’re likely to trip over in a gym. Whether you’re running inside or outside though, the important thing is that you’re running!

The Equipment You’ll Need

One of the great things about running is that you don’t need any expensive equipment to get started. You should get yourself some new running shoes and a water bottle. It’s very important to keep yourself hydrated when you’re running.

You should also invest in some running sweatbands. You might want some other running clothes, but most people have an old pair of shorts and a t-shirt they can use. And there’s not really anything else you’ll need.

When to Take Breaks

Try not to take breaks if you’re only running for short amounts of time. If you’re constantly stopping, your running routine won’t have as much of an impact. Once you start to run for long periods of time though, it can help to slow down now and then.

One problem that a lot of new runners face is stitches. This is the pain in your side you feel when your muscles are starved of oxygen. If you get stitches, stop and take deep breaths and bend over and it should subside.

What Food You Should be Eating

Running is worthless if you don’t also make the effort to eat a healthy and balanced diet. You should stay away from carbohydrates as much as possible. And when you do eat carbs, make sure they’re whole grain.

If you combine a good diet with a well-planned out running routine, you’ll see the effects you want to see in no time at all. Remember to take it slowly at first and always keep hydrated though.
