After coming in to my local Road Runner Sports for their free gait test analysis, I was able to find a running shoe that accommodated my running form, providing just the right amount of support I needed in a shoe. You can read about the entire Shoe Dog process here, I highly recommend both beginning and new runners to try it out. As I mentioned in the post, I was previously recommended stability shoes, but when I came in this time, was told I should run in neutral running shoes. Had I not gone in and taken the gait analysis, I would have just picked another pair of stability shoes! Read the rest of this entry »

I never understood the importance of wearing the right pair of running shoes back in high school when I first joined the cross country team. I would just buy the cheapest or coolest looking shoes available. I didn’t know that some were better fit for different types of runners! And that is probably why I was injured every year I ran in high school. It was not until just a few years ago that I was at a race expo and performed a gait analysis at the Brooks Running booth. At the time, they told me that I should be wearing stability shoes the help support my overpronation. And because of that recommendation, I had ran in 3 different versions of the Brooks Adrenaline GTS series shoes. Fortunately, I have not had any major injuries since high school (even from my 20+ mile runs, which I never did in high school). As a new member of the Running Buddies Team, I had the opportunity to perform this same test the other day at Road Runner Sports, using the Shoe Dog experience.

Although being part of the cross country team was one of my favorite things about high school, I did have more injuries while on the team compared to any other period in my life! Non-runners used to joke that cross country wasn’t a sport, that you ‘just run’. But there was so much more to it than what people saw on the surface. Although runners were running for personal improvements and PRs, it was still a team sport and if you were one of the top runners in your division, you had to work together as a team to defeat the opponents. I think I had my first running injury as early as one month into joining the team. Looking back now, I probably have my shoes to blame. But remember getting the early signs of shin splints in that summer. I would spend time everyday after practice icing my shins. The injury got so bad that I would have trouble putting pants on because it hurt so much to stand on the leg with shin splints! The thing is, I never rested like I probably should have (during practice or races). Since high school, I haven’t really had any major injuries, although I have gotten pretty beat up planing soccer in our adult league.

At 5 years in a row, the LA Chinatown Firecracker 10K is now the longest I’ve ran the same race every year. Of course, it helps that it has been a tradition to run this race with my siblings and more recently, nephews and even better my mom this year! It’s a great reason to visit my family in LA for the weekend, run a race together with them and then eat together afterwards to celebrate. There have really only been a few years where I have been fully prepared to compete in this race, unfortunately, this year was not one of them. I didn’t do too bad, but definitely not my best performances (actually, I ran 1 second slower than last year!) Results: 42:54 (6:54 min/mile), 8/189 AG, 37/2473 overall. What used to be a very competitive race against my, my brother and his friends, is now just a fun run that only a few people that I know participate in. Hopefully, my family continues to participate and maybe some of those others that missed this year. Read the rest of this entry »

Benefiting the American Cancer Society, the California 10/20 is a 10 mile run along the coast feature 20 bands throughout the course. The California 10/20 is a fairly new race series, the other one taking place in Austin, which I bet would be fun to visit. Unfortunately, when I was reading the race program the morning of the race, there was a letter from the race director saying this was the last year. I know planning and organizing a race is a lot of work, so it’s not too surprising to hear when they do not last. I was actually quite pleased with this race overall, hopefully they will be able to bring it back next year. Just as a reminder, I had ran a sub-19 5K not the previous morning and had not trained to run 10 miles (competitively), so I was pretty happy with the results: 1:10:51 (7:05 min/mile), AG 7/68, 96/2720 overall. Like I said in the race report for that 5K, I started off way too fast (5:50) and was tired for the rest of the race. I really didn’t want that to happen this time since I’d have many more miles to run this time around. Fortunately, I was pretty even paced throughout the run, which you can see in the splits below. This is the 4th Annual Jump Start Your Heart 5K. This is a non-profit event (100% proceeds) benefitting The Children’s Heart Foundation. The goal of The Children’s Heart Foundation is to bring health, hope and happiness to children impacted by congenital heart defects, the number one birth defect in the United States.
This race was on a Saturday but I had been training for and had planned to run a 10 mile race on Sunday. However, when my co-worker sent an email to the company about this, I couldn’t say no. It was for a good cause and needed as much support as possible. Since this was more of a fun run, there weren’t too many people taking this race seriously. Because of that, I got a spot at the very front of the starting line, which can be a good and bad thing. I didn’t have to worry about having to waste energy running around slower people, but that meant I would be running near some very fast people too. Here are the results: 18:54 (6.05 min/mi), 3/35 AG, 11/383 overall. Technically, this time would be a new PR, but according to my phone’s GPS, the distance was only 2.94 miles, which is pretty off of the 3.1 official 5K distance. And for some reason, I was put in the 30-34 AG, which makes it look like I placed 1st. But this was a local race, so they get a pass. Read the rest of this entry »

Health organization leaders who want to take their companies to a new level of excellence should note that there are several strategies they can implement to make it happen. Here are two:

Volleyball is a unique sport that has different movements than that of tennis, football, or basketball. As an athlete, you need the right equipment that keeps you safe on the court while giving you freedom of movement. Volleyball shoes are designed for the volleyball athlete. When you understand what makes them different than running shoes or cross trainers, you’ll have a better idea of what to look for when you’re shopping. Even though the shoes look similar, there are many differences in the design.
Soles and Midsoles
Running shoes are made with different material than volleyball shoes, because they are generally worn outside. Volleyball shoes have a sole made of a soft rubber that provides better traction on the court. It’s much softer than a running shoe, so you don’t want to wear your volleyball shoes outside on abrasive surfaces, because the sole would wear down quicker.
The midsole is the layer between the bottom of the shoe and the inside of the shoe. Volleyball shoes are designed to give a lot of support on the ball of your foot, where you spend a lot of time. This provides safety, support, and cushion for shock absorption and less risk of an injury. Regular tennis shoes provide different support, because they are designed for different motions.
Weight of the Shoe
You probably don’t think a few ounces of weight on your feet would make a big difference in your game. However, a lighter weight shoe improves your agility on the court. The materials used are still sturdy enough to provide the support you need during a game, but they won’t weigh you down as much. Try a pair of volleyball shoes from All Volleyball for one season and see how much different you play.
The Cost Difference
An athlete who plays one game a week and practices five days a week needs the right equipment for the game. The price of high quality volleyball shoes is not much different from the price of a high quality running shoe. The big difference is in the safety features. When you have the right support for your foot, you’re less likely to injure it. Volleyball shoes provide ankle stability, which also decreases the risk of injury.
How Should the Shoe Fit?
When purchasing a pair of volleyball shoes, you want your shoes to move with your feet, but you don’t want wiggle room inside the shoe. Think snug, but not tight. There should be less than a finger width between the top of the shoe and your toes. Get the right equipment to play the sport you love when you shop at All Volleyball.
