Coco Libre Protein: Organic Coconut Water Review
People are always looking for an edge when it comes to training, recovery and hydration. But there are so many products out there, how do you know what actually works? Coconut water is one of the more popular products that athletes claim to benefit in these areas. But recent studies are saying that it’s no better than drinking water! I wasn’t really a fan of coconut water as a kid. My parents would buy whole coconuts, crack it open, stick a straw into the center and drink straight from it. Since then, I’ve tried a few different brands of coconut water and have grown to really like the taste. However, the only time I would drink it is if they were offering samples of them at races, the price of coconut water was just too high for me. But if a coconut water offered additional benefits then I’d definitely be open to purchasing and help with my post-workout and race recovery.
Coco Libre is the maker of organic coconut water, but more recently, they came out with Coco Libre Protein, which features our Organic Coconut water + 20g of Grass Fed Milk Protein + 23 vitamins & minerals (and all with no added sugar). According to their website, “each refreshing drop contains a natural balance of electrolytes…K, Na, Mg, Ca and P to hydrate and replenish the body’s fluids.” I know a lot of individuals who workout and will drink different kinds of protein shakes as part of their routine. I have never been a fan of protein shakes or bars (they just don’t taste good!) But if I can have it mixed into a coconut water, which I do like, then why not?
Coco Libre Protein comes in 3 flavors: chocolate, vanilla and almond. I shouldn’t have been surprised, but when I first tried one, it really did taste like a combination of a protein drink and coconut water, but not as strong as one by itself. Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily. If you are looking just for a protein fix, then you’d probably just stick to the shake or bar. But combining it with a coconut water which can help with hydration, then it is just an added benefit. I’m not exactly sure how much of a price difference (if any) there is compared to regular coconut water, but I suppose even if it’s just a little bit more, the additional protein and nutritional benefits make it worth it. Coco Libre is sold at most grocery stores if you’re interested in trying it for yourself.
