Moto 360 Sport Smartwatch Review
The Moto 360 was one of the first (if not the first) smartwatches to be released under Google’s Android Wear OS. It paved the way for other hardware makers to release their own version of the smartwatch. But Motorola was one of the few to come out with a round smartwatch. The Moto 360 Sport Smartwatch is a variation of the newest version of the Moto 360. Like the name, it was designed for sport and fitness enthusiasts. I’ll get into the details below, but it’s basically a durable running watch that is stylish enough to wear as an everyday watch.
The Moto 360 Sport Smartwatch features a 1.37” round display, with a very thin aluminum bezel, IP67 protection to allow you to wipe away sweat and dirt and comes in black, white and flame orange colors. The common complaint that I’ve previously read about the Moto 360 is the display’s ‘flat tire’ located at the bottom of the watchface (where the sensor is located). I don’t really have a problem with it, if anything it’s unique from all other watches and allows the bezel to be as thin as possible.
Here are some additional details about the Moto 360 Sport Smartwatch:
- Silicone construction doesn’t absorb sweat and resists fading and staining, and includes ventilation channels for maximum comfort.
- Built in GPS – tracks distance traveled, pace, lap times, elevation. Even better, you won’t need to carry your phone with you on runs! And for runners who like to listen to music while they run, you can actually listen to music through Google Play Music and connect a pair of bluetooth headphones to listen to music without your phone!
- Android Wear apps – fitness apps include MapMyRun, Under Armour Record, Fitbit, Strava
- Motorola AnyLight – world’s first hybrid display to see the screen indoors and outdoors
- Heart rate at any glance – sensor on the back of the watch
- Notifications – Email, text message, calendar reminders, traffic and weather reports, Facebook updates, sports scores
- Misc – lock front door with Kevo, scan boarding pass from watch, open Google Maps and get directions, start Ford electric car with one tap
- Wireless charging, rests on a sleek looking charging dock
- Moto Body Sport / Running – fitness apps from Motorola, for tracking steps, runs, calories burned, etc.
- Built in mic – OK Google voice commands (emails/text messages, weather, sports scores, traffic, add alarm/notes, etc.)
- Different watch faces – can look like a digital watch or watch faces
Motorola actually came out with another smartwatch before smartwatches became popular. They released a product called the MOTOACTV (read my review here), which had quite a few of the same features as the Moto 360, just not as seamlessly integrated and executed. The design was not as impressive as these new smartwatches. The cube shape just didn’t work, but I loved how you would be able attach the devicec to other accessories (watch band, arm band, bike stand, etc.) I’m hoping they used the MOTOACTV as a learning experience to develop the sleek looking Moto 360 Sport Smartwatch.
The Moto 360 Sport Smartwatch seemingly does it all. As a runner, I’m able to track my runs on the watch, the built in heart rate monitor can tell me how hard I am running. Once I’m done with a run it’ll upload it to Moto Body app on my phone and I can get more details. When I’m not running, it’s the perfect companion to my smartphone. I can receive email and text message notifications, calendar reminders, Facebook/weather/sports updates, and so much more. The built in microphone allows me to make quick notes but also call on Google Now to answer the most random questions possible. One neat feature is the translate app, which allows you to speak into the mic and it’ll translate into another language. You can then turn the watch outward to whoever you are trying to communicate with, very useful if you are traveling abroad.
Overall, I think the Moto 360 Sport Smartwatch works great as a running watch, but the added features of Android Wear make it one of the better GPS smartwatches on the market. Whether you are looking for a dedicated GPS watch or a general smartphone, I would highly recommend the Moto 360 Sport Smartwatch!
