MTailor Custom Tailored Dress Shirts App Review
You don’t really hear people use the phrase, “there’s an app for that” as much anymore. But I was still surprised when I learned about the app, MTailor which allows you to order custom tailored dress shirts just by using photos/video taken from your smartphone or tablet’s camera. And that claims to be 20% more accurate than actual tailors? Sounds too good to be true? Well I was too and almost didn’t even bother ordering one (even with a free code) because it was only available for iOS when I heard about it. Fortunately, they released an Android version of the app around late December and I finally took the plunge to go through the ordering process.
MTailor is a pretty straightforward concept (although I still don’t understand how they calculate each person’s measurements). Using the app and your phone or tablet’s front facing camera, it will record you as you stand in front of your camera and will calculate your measurements using just that data; you do not have to include your height, weight, or any measurements whatsoever! There must be some software that determines your precise measurement, there is no way individuals are looking at this footage to determine that information.
The ordering process is just as easy, there are just a few steps you need to go through and the app guides you through it very quickly. The first step is selecting the fabric of your choice, which includes a decent collection of solid, stripped, flannel and patterned designs. The price will vary by fabric, usually $69-$89. Once you select the fabric, you will need to choose the collar and cuff. Fortunately, the app will recommend certain ones that go well with your fabric, or you can choose a completely different one. There are a few other options in this process, but those are the main ones.
Next is actually getting measured, which can get a little awkward. Like I said, you use your device’s camera and record a video of you (shirtless and in your underwear)! Technically, you can wear spandex and a tight shirt, but having to wear that in my living room while spinning around still felt strange. You can’t have anyone else help too, the device needs to be sitting on the floor, facing your direction while you stand about 10 feet away. I’m assuming this is so the software can get a good frame of reference for all customers. This process actually took longer than expected because the camera wasn’t capturing the correct footage for some reason, and I think the app crashed once. It did just launch for Android, so I kept trying and it finally went through. I would assume things like lighting and your phone’s camera can affect measurement outcome, but the information they got from me seemed good enough.
Reading some other reviews online, it looks like the shirts are manufactured and cut in China, but the quality of the shirts feel very premium. Because of the custom nature of the product as well as where it’s shipping from, I assume that’s why it takes a few weeks to receive your shirt. I ordered mine on Jan 16, received an email saying my fabric was cut on Jan 25, delivery confirmation on Feb 3 and delivered on Feb 4. So a little less than 3 weeks to get a custom fitted dress shirt.
The fit of this shirt was pretty darn close. I think I’ve only had one dress shirt custom tailored, but I would say considering I did not have anyone take any physical measurements in person and did not provide any personal data beforehand, the results are very impressive. The quality was top notch, when I finally wore the shirt, I had a friend guess the cost of the shirt and he said well over $100. Sure, you won’t be able to say it’s a certain big name brand, but being able to tell people that it was custom tailored using an app on my phone is a far better story.
I can see MTailor expanding by providing more fabric types, improved usability in the app as well as faster shipping times. And I almost forgot to mention, there is free shipping on all orders as well as free exchanges, returns and refunds. So you really don’t have much to lose, might as well download the app and give it a shot! The app is available for download on Android and iOS.
