Running Socks Product Reviews
I never thought socks would make that much of a difference when it came to running. Whenever I bought running socks, I usually just picked the ones that were cheapest and had the most in a pack. More often, than not, that usually meant the plain looking low-cut cotton socks. Since I started running again a couple of years ago, I’ve learned that socks definitely affects how well you run, or at least how your feet feel during a run. When I ran my first half marathon, I was in pain for most of the 2nd half of the run. In addition to sore and tired legs, my feet were literally on fire! I made the mistake of wearing the wrong pair of running socks during the race. There are many things to consider when looking for the right pair of running socks: fabric, length, technology/features, purpose etc. Learn more about the following running socks below.
SmartWool PhD Running Light Micro Socks
The SmartWool PhD Running Sock is an ultra light micro running sock for mild weather and shorter distances. WOW (wool-on-wool) technology in high-density impact zones prevents shock and abrasion. SmartWool utilizes a 4-degree Fit System with four bands across the arch, two along the instep and the ankle for a performance fit and keeps the sock in place. Mesh ventilation zones combine with the inherent properties of merino wool’s moisture, temperature and odor management.
Materials: 73% Merino Wool, 24% Nylon, 3% Elastic
Sock Height: Micro
Sock Cushion: ultra light cushion
Features:
- WOW (Wool on Wool): adds an additional layer of SmartWool to protect the heel and forefoot against shock, abrasion and blisters.
- 4-Degree Fit System: four-point sport compression system provides an incredibly secure, comfortable fit around the heel, arch and instep. Your socks will stay exactly where you want them to. Favorite feature: Heel-top band keeps the sock from sagging!!
- Mesh Ventilation Zone (MVT): strategically placed mesh ventilation zones manage moisture to prevent blisters.
- Temperature Regulation: SmartWool transport sweat and water vapor from the skin directly through the fiber to ensure efficient evaporation of sweat from the body. SmartWool buffers the body’s microclimate in changing environmental conditions, maintaining comfort through natural “air conditioning” by absorbing moisture from the air while releasing a small amount of heat.
- Odor Control: Sweat escapes through SmartWool fibers before it turns to a liquid, therefore, odor-causing bacteria can’t build up.
PowerSox APF Lo-Cut Running Socks
Each individual PowerSox APF (Anatomical Performance Fit) running sock in the pair is designed to fit the left and right foot, and is labeled appropriately so you don’t get confused. It fits the specific curves of each foot and contours and conforms to the way our toes are aligned in each foot. This allows a better overall fit and performance as well.
One thing I noticed when I first tested out the PowerSox APF running socks is that they are thicker than other socks I’ve used before. However, with that extra cushioning, my feet did feel a lot more comfortable and protected during the run. In addition to comfort, the socks offer excellent durability and wicking performance for those extra strenuous activities. The running socks are very snug on the feet and are a perfect length (I’ve ran a number of ankle socks that seem to slip into my shoes, which is just annoying!)
Materials: 90% Polyester, 9% Nylon, 1% Spandex
Features:
- Hand-Linked Toe Seam allows for comfort and protection from blisters
- Selective Cushioning allows for cushion to be strategically placed in only key areas of the foot to provide essential shock absorption
- Arch brace maintains a snug fit and minimize sock movement in shoe
- Y Heel makes for a deep contoured heel pocket to provide stability
- Moisture Management to keep foot cool, dry and comfortable by wicking perspiration away from the surface

Zensah, which is more commonly known for their compression socks, also offers trail running socks that’s a great complement to your current trail running and hiking gear. The Zensah trail running socks use super-soft, synthetic fabric and is about mid-shin length. Although the length has the ability to protect your legs from rocks, branches, etc. while you’re on the run, they actually ran down to my ankles during the run.
The seamless design of the socks helps prevent blisters and skin irritation while featuring thermal regulating enhancements that keeps your feet from getting too hot or cold. The trail running socks are designed using a patented knitting technique that creates a support zone around the arch and ankle that adjusts to your foot shape to increase comfort and enhance support while running.
Another feature worth mentioning is how the socks fit; it almost has a compression sock feel to it. It’s very snug on the feet but offers just the right amount of support in the arch and ankle areas.
