Why you should run the Spartan Race

spartan race

Ever since I started running again 5 years ago, I always looked for races that were either a new course I never ran before, a smaller race that I had a chance to place in, or sometimes just ones that are closer to where I lived. But they were all the same: just running. I did get a free entry to a color run before and for some reason, I still thought it’d be timed. The first time I heard about these new ‘obstacle’ runs was probably the ROC Race, which was more of a fun run with some obstacles in between. I then heard about some extreme obstacle races like Tough Mudder that actually have wires that send electric shocks and others where you have to jump through fire?!

Fun runs are good for casual runners who would not run otherwise, it’s a great way to motivate people to workout more than once a month and hopefully train just a little bit for the event. I’ve always wanted to try an obstacle run, but never got around to it. Although I did used to go to the gym quite often and felt I was in enough shape to complete an obstacle race, it still never happened.

Flash forward to last week when I got a mysterious text from my high school cross country friend who said to mark September 14 on my calendar, we’re doing the Spartan Race! He had just got back from the event, cheering on his brother and friends who were competing in the race and he was inspired to do the same. But like he, my friend wanted to make sure he was prepared for the event, so he’s hoping 3 months is enough for him. I just finished running a half marathon, 66 mile bike ride and 5K in the last 2 weeks, so my cardio will not be an issue. I did use to go to the gym, but did not go consistently enough to really improve, but just maintain my fitness levels.

I do have the opportunity to participate in the Spartan Race and potentially offer one as a giveaway item. Simply add me on Twitter and send a tweet about why you want to run the Spartan Race.
